| take the individual challenge? how to take the challenge. This year, the Triangle is celebrating Eat Local Month in June to honor our local abundance and our region's diverse food producers. Take the Eat Local Challenge any time during the month. The challenge is to eat only foods grown, produced, or raised within a self-determined radius of your home - 50, 100, or 200 miles, for a meal, a day, a week or the whole month - you decide which challenge is for you. While eating 100% locally is totally possible, your Challenge can include "Marco Polo" exceptions of ingredients like salt, olive oil and dried spices. Since many of us have certain foods which we just cannot live without (caffeine, anyone?), "Wildcards" are a popular option: allow yourself 0-5 non-local items that may be consumed during your challenge -- specific foods which cannot be obtained locally but we consider critical to our daily existence (common examples include coffee, tea, chocolate, olive oil, etc). We leave the choice up to you, and ask you to consider your Wildcards in advance and plan your meals accordingly. The Eat Local Challenge is not about deprivation, but is rather a celebration of all the wonderful food that is available here in the Triangle! It is an opportunity for us to stretch ourselves, be creative in our food choices, and learn more about where our food comes from and what impact it has on our community. To celebrate Eat Local Month, attend events throughout the Triangle or host your own Eat Local potluck to get your friends and neighbors involved. Check out the events and post new ones on our blog. And also take a look at participating restaurants in the Triangle, so you can go out to eat and still eat local. |
